SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER, BD/ED CLASSROOM

 

BASIC FUNCTION: The Teacher Therapist plans, coordinates, and implements the assigned classroom program.  Additionally, the teacher therapist provides classroom leadership and works in cooperation with the teacher therapist assistant.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

1.      Educational Instruction

Plans, coordinates, evaluates, and implements a comprehensive curriculum which meets the individualized behavioral, academic and social needs of each student enrolled in the classroom and which is directly related to each child’s Individualized Educational Plan.  Assesses student performance levels (behavioral and academic) and recommends appropriate goals and objectives in the IEP staffing process.

 

2.      Behavioral Treatment

Implements the clinical behavioral treatment program according to guidelines, including individualized programming and crisis intervention.

 

3.      Social Skills Training

Implements social skills training and integrates social skills curriculum throughout the day.

 

4.      Interdisciplinary Team Structure

Works with the teacher therapist assistant in a team teaching capacity, providing classroom leadership and working in cooperation with him/her.  Cooperates with the administrative/supervisory and support staff in planning for and scheduling programming and/or services for the students and/or their families.  Attends meetings as assigned.

 

5.      Progress Reporting

Collects, prepares and presents behavioral and academic data on each child in the classroom.  Maintains behavioral data and applies statistical analysis as required by program standards to measure student progress.

 

6.      Lesson Plans

Develops and implements lesson plans that reflect best practice in specialized educational instruction.

 

7.      Professional Development

Keeps abreast of current trends and developments in the area of special education  and provide expertise in long range planning for the HJSHS program.

 

 

8.      Materials and Supplies

Inventories and orders supplies according to guidelines and within the classroom budget.

 

9.      Supervise University Students

Supervises and evaluates university special education students, junior practicum students and/or expressive therapists.

 

10.  Quality Improvement

Contributes to quality improvement through active participation in Quality Improvement activities and in the School Improvement Planning process.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES:

 

Coordinates transportation for field trips, including driving agency vehicles as needed.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

1.      Bachelor’s degree in appropriate area of special education and/or secondary education, specializing in teaching children with one or more of the following disabilities: behavior disorders, emotional problems, learning disabilities, autism, speech and language deficits and/or developmental delays.

 

2.      Must be certified with the State of Illinois to teach in a secondary special education classroom.  Certification in the area of behavior disorders is preferred.

  

3.      At least one year of teaching in a special education program in a public or private facility is preferred.

 

4.      Willingness and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team structure.

 

5.      Knowledge of and skill in utilizing behavioral approaches with children.

 

6.      Must be able to implement non-violent physical crisis intervention techniques according to The Baby Fold’s physical management and crisis intervention procedures.

 

7.      Ability and willingness to travel for job responsibilities preferred, including a valid Illinois driver’s license, which has not been revoked or suspended within the past three years and use of a personal vehicle with adequate insurance.

 

8.      Must pass drug screen and necessary background checks.

 

9.      Demonstrated competence in serving a culturally diverse population.  Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse workforce.

 

10.  Mission-oriented and willing to apply The Baby Fold’s standards and beliefs to the performance of job duties.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, write, talk and hear; sit, stand, or walk;  use hands to type, write, or handle objects, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally team lift and/or move students up to 150 pounds; and physically restrain aggressive students according to therapeutic crisis intervention guidelines. 

 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to visually supervise students and/or other clients for whom there is responsibility.  Must be able to visually assess a student’s well-being.  Also requires close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  Must be able to provide auditory assessments of the mental and emotional condition of a student.  

WORK HOURS:  8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday following the school calendar
