A PICTURE OF PREVENTION
Prevention is at the heart and soul of The Baby Fold's mission. We see first-hand the incredible damage done to children when support for parents is missing. We would give anything to roll back the clock for these children and families and provide the type of support that has proven to be so effective in preventing these tragic outcomes. The Baby Fold's Healthy Start program is a great example as 95% of the participating families have NOT been indicated for child abuse or neglect. Prevention programs help communities avoid harmful and costly family crises.
One Healthy Start success story comes from Danielle Dowell, a teen mother who was referred to Healthy Start by the McLean County Health Department.
"Growing up, I didn’t have the best parenting role models. I was a wild child with no limits or boundaries. Shortly before I got pregnant, all that stopped. I came to my own realization that I didn’t want to live life like that."
Danielle was paired with a Baby Fold counselor who met regularly with her, providing her education, resources and hope she needed to make good parenting decisions for her new family.
"The Healthy Start program has been a huge privilege for me. Without it, I would still be living at my parent’s house with my ex going nowhere, collecting food stamps and state aid. I’d be a high school drop out with no G.E.D., no C.N.A. license, and no dreams."
Over time, Danielle gained confidence as a mother. She made critical decisions about employment, relationships, and responsibilities that empowered her to take charge of her family, doing whatever it took to make them whole and healthy.
"If I could tell you anything about this program, I’d tell you that it is one of the best programs out there for teen moms. They give single parents hope and faith that they can raise a child. The people are real. They care. And I owe so much to everyone who has donated and made this program possible."
Please consider a gift to serve one of the 400 women in our community who are currently at risk of abusing or neglecting their children.
